This is pure empirical juice

Troubleshooting common Windows issues
The important thing is that some sort of memory violation has occurred. Knowing what was happening when the error occurred and the complete error message will help. Fine tuning your Windows computer with the latest drivers might be the most important step..
General Protection Fault (GPF)
Here a extensive list of GPF: http://www.aumha.org/kbegpf.php

Your graphic display interface GDI. exe often can play bad games... you work fine for several hours and suddenly you get all sort of error and violation messages.
delete and reinstall the video drivers.

One solution could be to uninstall all the drivers using jv16 PowerTools [not for novice]

Don't forget the Win 98's information "tools" a lot of resources to save windows and IE troubles
located in program>accessories>system tools>system information>tools +
In Spanish:  Programa>accesorios>herramientas de sistema>informacion de sistema> herramientas +

Also look at msconfig ..  Start> run>  msconfig .. see advanced ... and find useful stuffs like disabling the scandisk after bad shutdown

System cooking:
1. Control panel> System > output> advanced configuration> system archive>set to usage ... to Web server.
Comment: to set the option " Net server " (Sevidor de Red en Spanish) instate of office PC  takes a little extra system resource but it remains the best quiz for a power user.

Lately I  have tested  to allow virtual memory configuration instate of Windows automatic administration. Memory automatic administration is bad but the best option.
Ram Page  really makes the difference. the system has any longer  crashed since I use it.

Freeware treasure's hunting adventure doesn't let you alternative.
To reinstall Window with 200 programs is pretty time consuming. So I have been seeking to apply a systematic discipline for the maintenance of my machine discipline that looks like the 18th century's "purgative" medicine described by Molière.

*  Clean up in deep any junks: Registry Temporary files broken links etc. Registry RAM  is an  incredible little wonder to cleanup the disk.

*  Scan and Defrag the disk after any period of troubles.

*  A week time differed registry backup like the @Monday backup and an actualized boot diskette.
see also at Winbacker but don't loose your time ever looking for some trick to save a very sick windows .

* Close the application after using. most load in less than a second, use the tool bar to get applications at hand.

* Uninstall cleanup the Registry and reinstall any resident application showing the most minimum trouble.
* Uninstall the last "new" installed programs

When the machine slow down don't expect to shutdown the power 20 times before to seek for the root of the trouble! When you get a Kermel32 show check the application involved and eventually uninstall and reinstall office. Get the last patches from MSN. if you install a patch reboot immediately

* The Heuristic concept of system's control program is certainly the best prevention approach regarding unknown virus development.. The Russians have good creation in heuristic virus detection technology unfortunately I don't know any available freeware of that sort. See the Anti-virus page

*  The discipline and the right methodology regarding our files backup should be our primordial concern but is not the case.
The best solution remains to have a second smaller hard disk to keep there synchronized your active valuable data file. Also remember that is easy to connect and disconnect a hard disk and carry eventually in your pocket! If you have only a single unit divide the formatting in C,DandE virtual disks that make easy to only reformat C:\. in case of fatal error of windows or from Internet Explorer.

* The full integration of I.E. in Win 98 makes impossible to reinstall E.I.
But you can uninstall the new added version see at information tools

* An emergency management folder of shortcuts linking to a single folder any folders having a strategic value is very easy to do. In case of emergency you can go there to move or delete what ever all sensitive files. Power Desk  is the perfect tool to make it.

*  If you can't invest too much money in your PC (3/4 of the humanity don't enjoy the Euro-Dollar acquisitive power) better to invest first in extra RAM memory than into a faster CPU.
Extra Ram of128 MB really make a difference and more better!
Over 256MB make win98 extremely stable.

*  Unable most application including MSN office in the window 's Start Menu can free up some 25% of your system recourse at start .

* Most commercial software ask US$ 30 (a day engineer income in many countries) to improve your third's world expensive and lousy ISP connection. Don't buy the dream.
Any IP setting freeware does the same thing. After trying most of them Naviscope  and Tcp/Ip Accelerator are the best and reliable freeware of the kind

However don't expect miracle when you get a transfer under 1000 bauds like has been the case with Prodigy Telmex of Mexico for years..
Don't listen the ISP employee asking you to set down the Modem under the nominal connection rate. 115KBd work better with that king of lousy service.

* When a program freeze use (1) key: Control+alt+Del (2) in the "close program's Window" try first to close other program that you don't need before to try to close the program in conflict. but never close "explorer" . If it tucked anyways ...
Better use the coolreset button than to turn off the power

* Get familiar with MSCONFIG : start>run>msconfig  just for the fun of curiosity and  "sysedit" will allows you to tweak the all system.

Some old DOS commands that we don't use often anymore but useful in case of Windows crashes:
CD Change Directory
.. Change Directory Back One Level
DIR List Directory and Files
MD Make Directory
RD Remove Directory
DEL Delete
/ Apply switch

DELTREE C:\ ...Delete Directory All Contents and Sub-Directories
FORMAT C:\   ... Running Format will delete everything anyway.

Problems to download a program?

If eventually you can't download a program from a link please copy the name of the program and run a search in Google  to find an alternative site.  Some freeware included in this selection could be eventually very hard to download like in the case of the free email extractor.

TUCOWS Internet Dictionary

Comment: An simple and practice Internet glossary .

Tucows is undoubtedly one of greater software sources of the Internet including Freeware mixed with commercial shareware.
